CASCADE BRIDGE

Rhode Island School of Design • Architecture Design • Spring 2024

Architecture Design - Instructor: Christopher Bardt

Material: Mass timber and steel

The bridge is part of a larger project I did for the Spring semester at RISD.

It connects a walking path to a Performance Art Center on the North side of the river.

A sense of continuity and fluidity in the water environment is suggested through the evolving structure created from the repetition of small trusses along the catenary arch. Each truss wraps around the main beams, fusing with the joist and railing like a string.

As you move toward the north, the West side expands and curves downward toward the river, creating a focal point for resting and contemplating the landscape. On rainy days, this moment allows rainwater to flow back to the river, forming small waterfalls.
